  And he couldn’t help but count down the days he had left with her—six months had gone by in the blink of an eye, and he had nowhere near enough left before she would leave him forever.

  As he passed his stallion on to a stable boy and headed into the great hall, he pushed those unhappy thoughts away in favor of thinking of the warm welcome he would get from everyone, but especially her.

  But it wasn’t Fleur that greeted him. Instead it was a group of women and men who all looked positively stricken, even more so than the night he had taken his belt to her.

  It was Marianne who came forward and broke the news to him. “She’s gone. She’s gone.”

  Raiz stopped in his tracks then advanced on her as if she was a nice tasty morsel and he was a tiger, grabbing her upper arms fit to leave bruises. “Tell me, old woman!” he roared.

  “Duardo saw her from the woods—she got on a horse whose rider was wearing outlandish clothes. He didn’t seem to have coerced her at all. Several people saw him ride through town towards the castle and then back again—the second time with something in the saddle in front of him that was covered by a cloak, but was big enough to be a small person.” She was weeping by the time she got to the end of her sad speech.

  Raiz stood there for a long moment, letting the hurt sink in, and then he stalked back out of the house and yelled for his horse.

  He didn’t care what he had to do to get her back, but he was going to do just that, or die in the trying.
