Nina frowned. "Well, it's nice to see that I can still keep your interest," she commented sarcastically. "What were you thinking of? You were a million miles away."

Although he could tell she was still aroused, she was still very concerned about him, stroking his hair and trying to look deeply into his eyes.

Gain collapsed next to her, then gathered her tight up against him, hugging her hard, as if he was afraid she'd disappear if he didn't hang onto her.

"Gain, what is it? What's the matter?"

One big hand came up to brush the hair back from her face. "I was just thinking about Dunn Plourde."

Nina's snort was reassuring to his ears, when he hadn't even known he'd wanted the reassurance. "Why were you thinking of that snake?"

Gain's massive shoulders shrugged up and down once. "I don't know. I guess I was just wondering if you ever thought about him..."

He looked so tentative, and that was such an unusual departure from his usual macho bravado and complete confidence that she mirrored his caress of her, cupping his rough cheek and hard jaw against her palm while keeping his eyes locked with hers. "Well," she said softly, "I won't lie to you. At first, I missed the work something fierce. But then I started writing other things elsewhere, and now I'm writing full time." Nina looked deeply into her husband's eyes. "But that's not what you mean. And the answer is an emphatic 'no'. Once you'd thrown him out - " she snorted. "Once he'd made a move towards me that was entirely inappropriate for a boss to make on an employee, he was persona non grata, as far as I was concerned. I've never seen him sense."

Gain didn't look all that reassured.

"If you'll remember, I even made Molly go get my things from the paper. I honestly haven't seen him sense then. If I did, though, I'd have to ask him how he could have gotten where he was - is today - when he's obviously just another asshole."

He clutched her to him tightly, squeezing her until she squeaked. "If you'd gone with him, you could have had anything you wanted - cars, horses, travel - "

"Yeah, right," she barely got out against his chest, "for the five minutes it lasted." Nina pushed him over onto his back, and he let her, still keeping one arm wrapped around her back to hold her to him. She caught his eyes again and said in no uncertain terms, "I have everything I want - everything I've always wanted - right here." She tapped his sternum with a writer's short fingernail. "I can't remember ever wanting anyone or anything else, other than to be married to you. And we are. And we have been, for longer than I want to consider, and I intend on growing very old with you, Gain Decker." Nina would have grabbed his lapels to emphasize her point, if he'd had any. "We may not have Dunn's money, but we're doing very nicely, and I wouldn't trade our lives for anything. We've got our health, our friends, a very nice house, a couple cars, and most importantly, we have each other."

It was her turn to need some reassurance from him. "Right? You're not thinking of Dunn because you've fallen in love with one of your customers down at the shop, right?"

Gain frowned up at her. "Of course not! Who could hope to compete with you?"

  "Damn straight!"

They dissolved into each other's arms, becoming a thrumming mixture of tangled limbs and sensual sighs.

When everyone finally got together later that evening to watch the first of the two Star War's movies on the thirty two inch screen - which, conversely, were really the fourth and fifth installments of the series - the dining room table fairly groaned under the load of food everyone had brought - there were Reese's peanut butter cup muffins, tender, smoky shredded barbequed beef and rolls for sandwiches, several different types of salads including one that was all fresh fruit, chips, dips, and the piece de resistance, Nina's own frozen mud pie, with coffee ice cream, chocolate pudding, and layers of hot fudge, chopped almonds, and whipped cream.

Molly was in the process of filling her plate to the brim when Nina breezed in from the kitchen, replenishing the plastic silverware and paper plates that had dwindled since everyone had already made their once through and was impatiently waiting in the living room for the movies to start. "You haven't sat down yet, I noticed."

Nina frowned at Molly. The woman was entirely too perceptive sometimes for Nina's tastes. "I'll sit down when the movie starts."

"Gingerly, I bet. Want me to try to oust Glenn from the comfy chair?" she offered, but her supposedly sympathetic offer lacked heart. Nina had told her what happened when she asked about where the touted plasma TV was.

Sticking her tongue out at her best friend, Nina said, "No, thank you, I'm fine. I'm going to sit on Gain's lap, anyway."

Molly couldn't keep herself from rolling her eyes. "You guys are too much. You've been married forever and you're still all over each other like a couple of teenagers."

A huge, self satisfied grin spread over Nina's face. "Yeah, we are, aren't we?" she beamed unapologetically.

With an almost disgusted sigh that came out as more envious than anything else, Molly shook her head and wandered into the living room, taking a seat across the room from her husband.

When she'd made sure that everyone had everything they needed at hand to enjoy the movie, Nina took her place on Gain's lap, which was surprisingly comfortable, especially when one was on it rather than over it.

Gain pointed the remote at the DVD player, and those immortal words filled the screen - as a chorus of groans filled the air from the younger people, who wondered out loud if this was some sort of reading test, or what.

But Nina and Gain ignored them all. She had her arm around his neck, and his hand lay possessively on her hip, and there was nothing in the world but the two of them - Jedi's be damned.
